Our Charter

Into The HiFi is a publication about listening rooms — the systems in them, the rooms themselves, and everything else in the room that shapes what you hear.

You can buy things here. We want to be straight about how that works, because we're asking people to write for us, and anyone thinking clearly about that should want to know where the money comes from and what it does and doesn't buy.

We are not an online retailer

We hold no inventory. We own no warehouse. There is no stockroom behind this website.

When you buy a component here, you're usually buying from an authorized dealer — their name on the receipt, their name on your statement, your warranty through them exactly as if you'd walked into their showroom. For some brands, Into The HiFi is the seller directly — we don't stock these either, but we're the seller of record and a distributor ships it. Either way, the page tells you which: look for "Sold by" before you buy.

When you buy a rug, a rack, or a room furnishing here, you are buying from us. We don't stock those either — they ship from the maker or the distributor — but we are the seller on that transaction and we make a margin on it. We say so on the page.

That's the whole picture. Different kinds of purchase, different in a way that matters, and we won't blur them.

What we publish

Room tours. System profiles. Reviews. Product briefings and launch announcements. Show coverage. Questions and the answers to them.

Most of it is written by members, not staff. That's the point. Until now, documenting a listening room in public meant building and maintaining a website, which meant the published record of this hobby skewed hard toward people willing to do that. It's a bad filter. Some of the best-considered rooms in the world belong to people with no interest in running a website.

How we make money

Commission on component sales. Paid by the dealer, taken automatically at the moment of purchase, for the transactions where a dealer is the seller. We don't set the price and we don't negotiate it.

Margin on room furnishings and direct-sold components. For the purchases where Into The HiFi is the seller, we make a margin.

Sponsorship and advertising. Brands and distributors pay for placement — briefings, launch announcements, homepage and newsletter positions. Every one is visually distinct from editorial and labelled.

Quote requests. A member who builds a system here can ask to have it quoted. The quote comes from an authorized dealer and the dealer is paid; we take a referral fee.

About prices

Where a dealer is the seller, the price shown next to a buy button is that dealer's own advertised price. We require dealers listed here to advertise at or above the manufacturer's minimum advertised price, so in most cases you'll see the same number from every dealer. That's deliberate.

We don't run a price comparison. We don't rank dealers by price, we don't badge a cheapest option, and we never show you a negotiated figure. Dealers on this site compete on whether they have it on demo, whether they'll come set it up, whether they'll take your old gear, and how far away they are. Those are the things worth choosing on.

What money cannot buy

A review. Not the review itself, not its conclusion, not a mention inside someone else's review.

A place in a recommendation. If we recommend something, nobody paid for it.

A room tour. Rooms are chosen because they're interesting. Never because of what's in them, whether that's an advertiser's amplifier or a rug we sell.

A byline, or an edit to one. Advertisers don't see copy before publication. Neither do dealers.

Position in a shop row. Dealers can't pay to appear first. The ordering is distance, demo availability, and services offered.

Silence. If something is disappointing we'll say so, including when it's selling well here and including when the manufacturer is paying us for something else that month.

Where commerce is allowed to appear

Reviews and room tours carry no buy buttons. If we've written a judgment about something, that page is for the judgment.

Buy options live on product pages, shop pages, and catalog surfaces — where you've gone looking to buy. Every one of them carries the same line: we earn a commission on this purchase.

Our writers

Nobody's pay, standing, or placement here is connected to whether anything gets bought. Our editorial team can't see commerce revenue at all, and that's enforced in our systems, not just in policy.

Most people who write here aren't paid, because most people here are writing about their own rooms and systems for the same reason they'd tell you about them in person. What they get is an audience, a permanent page, promotion when the work is good, press access at shows, and first call on review loans.

We also commission work — assigned pieces with a brief, a deadline and an editor — and we pay for that at professional rates. That's a different job, and the path to it runs through the community. It is not a different class of person.

Contributors disclose loans, gifts, discounts, and any relationship with a manufacturer, dealer or distributor. On the piece. Every time.

We ask contributors to write from actual listening. Not from spec sheets, not from consensus, and not from a language model. Use whatever tools help you write more clearly, but the listening, the judgment and the opinion have to be yours.

We would rather publish an honest opinion we disagree with than a safe one nobody means.

When we get it wrong

We correct in place, we say what changed, and we leave the record of the change visible. We don't quietly edit an old piece to make a bad call look better than it was.

If we break this

Tell us: [email protected]. If we've broken it, we'll say so here.
